How Analytics Metrics Work in the Essential Upsell & Cross Sell App
Understanding what each number on your Analytics page actually means is the easiest way to see how the app is performing for your store. In this guide, we'll walk through every metric you see on the Analytics dashboard, how each one is calculated, and how the numbers differ between offer types โ especially Volume Discount offers, where the math is slightly different.
๐ Important Things to Know Before You Start
Before diving into the metrics, here are a few things that are useful to keep in mind:
- The Analytics page is found inside the app under Apps โ Essential Upsell โ Analytics.
- You can filter the data by offer (All offers, a specific offer) and by date range (Last 7 days, Last 30 days, custom, etc.).
- Product-level analytics data is available.
- Two revenue-style metrics exist in the app: Total Sales and Added Revenue. They are not the same thing โ see section 4๏ธโฃ below.
- Your pricing plan tier is calculated from Added Revenue, not from Total Sales.
Let's walk through every metric step by step ๐
1๏ธโฃ Impressions
An Impression is counted every time one of your published upsell offers is shown to a shopper.
- A Product Page or Cart Page offer counts an impression when the widget is rendered on the page the shopper is viewing.
- A Pop-Up offer counts an impression when the pop-up opens.
- A Post-Purchase offer counts an impression when the post-purchase page is shown after checkout.
- A single shopper can generate multiple impressions if they view the same offer on different pages or in different sessions.
2๏ธโฃ Conversions
A Conversion is counted when a shopper accepts an offer and the order is successfully placed.
- For Product Page, Cart Page, and Pop-Up offers, a conversion happens when the upsell item is added to the cart and the order is completed.
- For Post-Purchase offers, a conversion happens when the shopper accepts the offer on the post-purchase page and the additional charge goes through.
- For Volume Discount offers, a conversion is counted when the shopper purchases through the volume widget. See section 5๏ธโฃ for the special rules that apply when only one item is purchased.
3๏ธโฃ Conversion Rate
Conversion Rate tells you how often shoppers act on an offer they see.
The formula is simple:
Conversion Rate = (Conversions รท Impressions) ร 100%
For example, if your offer is shown 100 times and 10 of those views turn into a paid order, your conversion rate is 10.00%.
4๏ธโฃ Total Revenue vs. Added Revenue
The app reports two different revenue numbers, and they answer two different questions.
Total Revenue
Total Revenue is the gross revenue from orders that the app participated in. It is the total amount the shopper paid for items that were added through, or unlocked by, one of your upsell offers.
- For Cross-sell, Frequently Bought Together, Add-On, Pop-Up, and Post-Purchase offers, Total Sales includes the full revenue from items accepted through the widget.
- For Volume Discount offers, Total Sales includes the revenue of orders where the shopper bought through the volume widget at a tier that gave them a discount.
- Total Sales is the right metric to look at when you want to answer "how much money did orders touched by the app generate?"
Added Revenue
Added Revenue is the uplift the app generated โ the portion of the sale that exists only because the app encouraged the shopper to buy more.
- For Cross-sell, Frequently Bought Together, Add-On, Pop-Up, and Post-Purchase offers, Added Revenue is currently equal to Total Sales โ every dollar of an accepted upsell is treated as added.
- For Volume Discount offers, Added Revenue is the incremental revenue from the extra units the shopper added because of the tier discount (see section 5๏ธโฃ for examples).
- Added Revenue is the metric used to calculate which pricing tier your store is on. You can read more about that in our How Pricing Plans Work in Essential Upsell & Cross Sell app article.
๐ก Quick way to remember it:
- Total Sales answers "how much did orders involving the app bring in?"
- Added Revenue answers "how much extra money did the app create on top of what would have happened anyway?"
5๏ธโฃ How Volume Discount Offers Are Calculated (the special case)
Volume Discount offers are different from the other offer types because the shopper can use the widget without actually buying "extra" items.
There are three scenarios:
A. Single item, no discount. A shopper buys 1 unit, and the first tier in your Volume Discount offer does not include a discount.
- Total Sales: not counted
- Added Revenue: not counted
B. Single item, with a discount applied. A shopper buys 1 unit on a tier that has a discount (for example, a "Buy 1 โ 5% off" tier).
- Total Sales: counted in full (the discounted price the shopper paid)
- Added Revenue: not counted
Here the customer actively engaged with an offer you configured, so attributing the sale to the app is fair. But because the shopper paid less than they would have without the app, there is no positive uplift โ so this is not included in Added Revenue and does not affect your billing.
C. Two or more items via the volume widget. A shopper unlocks a multi-item tier (for example, "Buy 2 โ save 20%").
- Total Sales: counted in full (the full amount the shopper paid for those items)
- Added Revenue: the incremental portion
For Added Revenue, we count the extra revenue that exists only because the shopper bought more than one unit. A worked example:
An item normally sells for $10. You set up a Volume offer with a "Buy 2 for $16" tier. A shopper buys the bundle.
- Total Sales = $16 (the full price paid for the bundle)
- Added Revenue = $16 โ $10 = $6 (the value of the second unit they wouldn't have bought without the app).
6๏ธโฃ Offer Breakdown Table
Below the four summary widgets, the Offer Breakdown table lists every offer that produced impressions, with the same four metrics shown per row:
- Offer name โ the name you gave the offer when you created it.
- Impressions โ how many times that specific offer was shown.
- Conversions โ how many of those impressions resulted in a paid order.
- Conversion rate โ Conversions รท Impressions for that offer.
- Total revenue โ the gross revenue attributed to that offer (same rules as section 4๏ธโฃ).
Use this table to compare offers side by side and see which ones are pulling their weight.
7๏ธโฃ Product Breakdown Table
The Product Breakdown table at the bottom of the page shows the actual products that were sold through the app's offers during the selected date range:
- Product โ the product (and variant, where applicable) that was sold.
- Units sold โ how many units of that product were sold through accepted offers.
- Revenue โ the gross revenue generated by that product through offers.
This is the easiest place to look when you want to know which products are being added most often via upsells, so you can lean into the ones that are working.

โ Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Total Sales higher than my Added Revenue? Because Total Sales includes the entire amount the shopper paid for offer-related items, while Added Revenue only counts the extra portion that the app caused. For Volume Discounts in particular, the two numbers will almost always differ.
My pricing plan was upgraded โ which number triggered it? Plan tiers are based on Added Revenue only, not Total Sales.
