App Pricing and Payment Gateways (Essential Subscriptions app)
Two questions come up before merchants commit to subscriptions. Here are the answers.
What Does Essential Subscriptions Cost?
The app is free to install and use. Every feature is included. There are no paid plans inside the app, and no charges appear on your Shopify bill for it.
If that changes we will tell merchants before it happens. If you installed the app while it was free and want to know where you stand, contact support and ask about the Founder plan.
Which Payment Methods Work With Subscriptions?
This is decided by Shopify, not by the app. A subscription needs a payment method that Shopify can charge again later without the customer being present. Shopify Payments and PayPal Express support that. Many local and accelerated payment methods do not.
If a payment method cannot be charged on a schedule, the customer will not be able to complete a subscription checkout with it, no matter which subscription app you use. Shopify's own documentation on subscription payment methods is the authority, so check there for your country and gateway.
Two cases merchants have hit:
- Mercado Pago cannot bill Shopify subscriptions automatically.
- A store where PayPal is the only method offered at checkout for a subscription usually has no other subscription-capable gateway enabled. Adding Shopify Payments, where it is available in your country, gives customers more choice.
If you are not sure whether your gateway will work, place one test subscription order before you launch. See the test order step in Getting started with Essential Subscriptions.
Shipping Rates
Subscriptions use your normal Shopify shipping. Add or change rates in your Shopify admin under Settings, Shipping and delivery, then the relevant profile and zone. The app reads those rates and does not have its own.
One thing to watch: an existing subscription stores the delivery price and the shipping method name from when it was created. Changing your Shopify rates does not update subscriptions that already exist. New subscribers get the new rate.
Currency
The widget shows prices in the currency of the market the customer is browsing, taken from your Shopify store and market settings. There is no currency setting in the app.
If a customer sees the wrong currency, check your store currency and your markets in the Shopify admin first, then open the product page in an incognito window to rule out a cached page. If it is still wrong, contact support with a screenshot and the product URL.
