Does the free gift work with the Buy it now button? (Essential Free Gift BOGO BXGY app)

No. This is a Shopify limitation. Buy it now (the dynamic checkout button) skips the cart and opens checkout with only that one product. Because the cart is skipped, the gift can't be added.

If gifts are important for your promotion, you can hide the Buy it now button on your product pages. In most themes this is in the theme editor's product page settings: turn off Show dynamic checkout buttons.
