The Referral System in the Essential Loyalty app is a powerful tool that allows you to reward loyal customers while attracting new shoppers to your store.
To access the referral feature, open the Essential Loyalty app and select "Referrals" from the drop-down menu on the left. This will lead you to the Referral Program page, where you can set up what discounts referrals and referrers can earn 📤.
👉 Make sure the referral program is enabled in your settings, so that it's visible to customers and they can take full advantage of it. ✅
Both sides are independently configurable. The referrer's reward and the friend's reward can each be set to any of five reward types: a fixed amount off, a percentage off, a free product (gift), free shipping, or points. The walkthrough below uses "10% off" as one example — it's not the only option. If a merchant wants a free-shipping or free-gift referral program instead of a discount, that's configured the same way, just with a different reward type picked for that side.

Here's how the Referral Program functions step-by-step, using a percentage-discount setup as the example:
- 🔐 The customer logs in via the floating widget bubble, Customer Account Page or Dedicated Loyalty Page
- 🔗 They find and copy their unique referral link.
- 👯♂️ They share it with a friend (via social media, messaging apps, etc.).
- 🧭 The friend opens the link and is redirected to your store, where a pop-up modal appears, introducing the reward — in this example, 10% off their first order! 🎉 The reward code is sent to the friend's email after they sign up, and automatically applied to their cart at checkout — no need to manually enter it. 🛒
- ✅ Once the friend completes their purchase, the referring customer receives their reward (a discount voucher, free product, points, or free shipping — whichever you configured), which they can apply at checkout on their next order (or which is applied automatically, depending on the reward type).
📸 Real Referral Experience
When a new user clicks a referral link, they'll see a modal introducing their reward. This clear, friendly pop-up makes it easy for them to understand and redeem their reward — no extra steps required. They can simply select their products and enjoy the reward at checkout 💳.
⚠️ Important Notes
- The friend's reward is available to new customers only.
- Referrers receive their reward only after the referred friend places a successful order — so "no reward without a purchase" applies to the referrer's side. The friend's reward is granted as soon as they sign up, before they've bought anything.
- Referred users don't need to enter any discount codes for discount-type rewards — the system applies it for them.
