Discount Not Applied: Main Reasons and Solutions

If a discount from an Upsell Offer isn’t being applied correctly, there are a few common reasons this can happen. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the most frequent causes and explain how to fix them step by step.

1️⃣ Upsell "Apply discount" feature set to "Only if trigger product is in cart"

Essential Upsell supports 2 different logics to apply a discount:

• Always
• Only if trigger product is in cart

Understanding which type you’re using is the first step to solving the issue. If the feature is set to "Only if trigger product is in cart" and the trigger product was removed from the cart, the discount won't be applied to the other products.

You can find this feature at the bottom of the Content tab of the upsell settings:

2️⃣ Discount Was Removed or Unpublished in Shopify

Upsell discounts are created and managed through Shopify Discounts with a specific discount created from the app called "Discount".

If the discount is removed, expired or unpublished in your Shopify Admin, it will no longer work with the upsell offer.

This can happen if:

• The discount was deleted manually
• The discount was unpublished or disabled in Shopify

How to Fix It

• Re-publish or re-activate the discount from your Shopify Admin Discount section

• If the discount was deleted, simply re-publish the upsell offer from the Essential Upsell app

  
  

👉 Re-publishing any upsell offer that has a discount will automatically recreate the required discount in Shopify settings.

3️⃣ Too Many Automatic Discounts Active

Another possible cause is having too many automatic discounts active in your store.

Shopify has a limitation that allows a maximum of 5 active automatic discounts at the same time. If your store already has 5 or more automatic discounts enabled, the upsell discount will not apply.

How to Fix It

• Go to Shopify Admin → Discounts
• Review your active automatic discounts

• Disable or delete any unused automatic discounts until you have 5 or fewer of them

  

Once the limit is respected, the upsell discount will work correctly.
