How to Set Up Spend Tiers on Cart Drawer
Spend Tiers: Free Shipping Bars, Discounts & Free Gifts
Spend tiers add a progress bar to the cart that rewards customers for spending or adding more — "Spend $20 more for free shipping", "Add 1 more for 15% off", or "Spend $75 to unlock a free gift". As the cart grows, the bar fills, and when a threshold is reached the reward applies automatically at checkout — no discount code for the customer to type.
This is the same feature merchants ask for as a "free shipping bar", "reward goal bar", "rewards", or "Buy X Get Y" — they're all built here.
Turning it on
- In the editor, open the Spend tiers section.
- Toggle it on for your market (your primary market is listed first).
- Click Save.
Step 1: Choose what the bar measures
Under Reward for, pick what fills the progress bar:
- Cart amount — based on the cart subtotal. The most common choice (free shipping, % off over a spend threshold).
- Item count added to cart — based on how many items are in the cart (e.g. Buy 3, get 15% off).
- Specific products added to cart — the reward unlocks when a particular product is in the cart.
If you chose Specific products, you can also set Exclude products so certain items don't count toward the threshold.
Step 2: Add your tiers
Each tier is one milestone on the bar. Add as many as you need — for example free shipping at $50 and 15% off at $100 — and order them from lowest threshold to highest.
For each tier, set:
- Tier name — for your reference (and used as the checkout discount label if you don't set a separate message).
- Min value — the cart amount or item count needed to reach this tier.
- Text before reaching the goal — the progress message customers see while working toward it. Use
{remaining_amount}to show the live amount left:
> You're only {remaining_amount} away from free shipping!
- Reward type — choose one:
- Order % — a percentage (or fixed amount) off the whole order. - Free product — a specific product added to the cart for free. Pick the product and quantity. - Shipping % — a discount on shipping. Set it to 100% for completely free shipping.
- Discount value / type — for Order % and Shipping %, choose Percentage, Fixed amount, or Custom, and enter the value.
Step 3: The "all rewards unlocked" message
Below the tier list, set Text after completing the full rewards bar — what customers see once they've unlocked every tier, e.g. 🎉 You've unlocked all rewards!
This message is easy to overlook — if customers report "nothing happens after the last tier", this is the field to fill in.
Common setups
| Goal | Reward for | Tiers |
|---|---|---|
| Free shipping over $50 | Cart amount | $50 → Shipping 100% off |
| Tiered discounts | Cart amount | $50 → 10% · $75 → 20% · $100 → 30% |
| Buy 3, get 15% off | Item count | 3 items → Order 15% |
| Spend $75, get a free gift | Cart amount | $75 → Free product |
| Buy X Get Y | Specific products | Product X in cart → Free product Y |
"Buy X Get Y" / BOGO: set Reward for → Specific products, choose the trigger product, and make the reward a Free product (the Y item). For a percentage instead of free, use an Upsell offer with a discount.
Selling to multiple markets / currencies
If you use Shopify Markets, each market appears in the market list and can be configured separately. Your primary market is the starting point; every other market can either inherit it or get its own settings.
For each additional market, choose:
- Use default market tiers — the market reuses your primary market's thresholds and rewards. Amounts are shown in local currency using Shopify's conversion.
- Use specific settings for this market — the market gets its own independent thresholds and rewards, entered directly in that market's currency.
Important — set local thresholds explicitly. Thresholds are not automatically FX-converted to a "fair" round number. If you set $50 on the default market, a customer in another market may see an oddly converted figure (or unlock the reward at the wrong spend). To control exactly what each market needs to spend — e.g. £40 in the UK, €45 in the EU — choose Use specific settings for that market and enter the local amount yourself.
Turning a market off hides the progress bar entirely for customers in that market; other markets are unaffected.
Excluding products from the threshold
Use Exclude products to stop certain items counting toward the spend threshold — for example, already-discounted items or gift cards. Free products added automatically as rewards are always excluded.
A note on the automatic discount
When you configure a tier with a discount, the app creates a Shopify automatic discount behind the scenes (you'll see an entry called "Essential Cart – Automatic Discount" in your Shopify admin). This is expected — it's how the reward applies at checkout. See Discounts & the discount code field for how this interacts with manual codes.
Design & translations
- Switch to the Design sub-tab to recolour the bar, milestone markers, and text.
- Each tier's messages can be translated per language and per market.
