How to Set Up Upsell Offers on Cart Drawer

Upsells & Product Recommendations

Upsells show product suggestions inside the cart drawer — a row of recommended products the customer can add with one click, optionally at a discount. You can run several offers at once and control exactly when each one appears.

This article covers product upsells and, at the end, order add-ons like shipping protection and gift wrapping.

Create an offer

An upsell offer's settings

  1. Open the Upsell section in the editor.
  2. Click Add offer.
  3. Click the offer to open its settings.

Set:

  • Internal offer name — only you see this; it helps you tell offers apart in the list (e.g. Accessories upsell).
  • Offer name — the heading shown to customers above the suggestions (e.g. You might also like).
  • Button text — the label on the add button (defaults to Add to cart).

Step 1: When the offer appears (Trigger)

The trigger decides which carts show the offer:

  • All products — the offer can appear for any cart.
  • Specific products — only when one of the products you select is in the cart.
  • Specific collections — only when the cart contains a product from a collection you select.

Watch out: don't set the same product as both the trigger and the offered product. If the only product on offer is already the trigger product (and "hide products already in cart" is on), there's nothing left to show, and the offer silently won't appear.

Step 2: What products to suggest

Choosing specific products or automated recommendations
Choosing specific products or automated recommendations

Choose one of:

  • Specific products — you hand-pick the products. You can choose variants, drag to reorder, and optionally set a different discount per product.
  • Automated recommendations — Shopify picks relevant products automatically based on the cart. Choose the type:

Related — products similar to / frequently bought with cart items. - Complementary — products you've marked as complementary in Shopify's Search & Discovery app.

What drives "Related" recommendations? They come from Shopify's own recommendations engine — not a setting in our app. If the wrong products keep showing (e.g. you keep seeing the first cart item's category), refine them in Shopify's Search & Discovery app, or switch to Specific products to control the list exactly.

Turn on Hide products already in cart so you never suggest something the customer has added. Only in-stock products are ever shown.

Step 3: Add a discount (optional)

  • No discount — products show at regular price.
  • Percentage off — a % off every product in the offer.
  • Fixed amount off — a set amount off every product in the offer.
  • Custom — a different discount per product (only when using Specific products).

You can also set:

  • Discount message — a short label shown at checkout (e.g. Bundle deal 10% off).
  • Limit discounted quantity — cap how many units get the discount.
  • Apply discount to — Always, or Only when the trigger product is in the cart (so the discounted add only works as a genuine add-on, not a standalone discount).

Run multiple offers

Add as many offers as you need and use the toggle beside each to turn it on/off without deleting it. When a cart opens, the app shows offers where the trigger matches, the offer is on, and at least one product is in stock and not already in the cart.

This is how you link different upsells to different products — e.g. show charms when a bracelet is added, and socks when shoes are added — by creating one offer per trigger/product pairing.

Order add-ons (shipping protection, gift wrapping)

An order upsell is a single add-on offer shown in the cart — like shipping protection or gift wrapping — with its own price, rather than a product from your catalogue.

To add one, create an order upsell and set:

  • Offer name — what the customer sees.
  • Price — the add-on's price. Optionally a Compared-at price to show a strikethrough.
  • Description — optional line shown beneath the name.
  • Image — a preset (Shipping protection or Gift wrapping) or your own uploaded image, with an adjustable icon size.
  • Auto-remove when cart is empty — clears the add-on if the customer empties their cart.

Order add-ons are excluded from spend-tier thresholds, so they won't accidentally push a customer over a reward line.
