Market & Location Settings on Preorder / Back in Stock campaigns

Run a preorder in some markets but not others, and control which warehouse locations' stock decides when preorder turns on. Two settings work together:

  • Markets (on each preorder campaign) — where the preorder is offered.
  • Markets & locations (in Settings) — which locations' stock each market counts.

You can use either on its own. Even with a single market, use Markets & locations to limit which locations feed your preorder.

Step 1: Choose which markets sell the preorder

  1. Open (or create) a preorder campaign and go to the Content tab.
  2. Find the Markets section — "Choose in which markets preorder will be active."
  3. Pick one:

All markets (default) — preorder runs everywhere. - Specific markets   — "Show preorder in specific markets. In other markets customers will see regular 'Add to Cart'."

  1. For Specific markets, click the + in the Markets card to open Assign markets, tick the markets you want, then click Done.
  2. Set the Sold out button text — this is what shoppers in non-selected markets see when the item is out of stock and Shopify's "Continue selling when out of stock" is on. (Default: Sold out.)
  3. Save, then Publish.

You can run different campaigns on the same product for different markets — e.g. an "out of stock" preorder for the US and an "always on" preorder for Spain — as long as their markets don't overlap.

Step 2: Map markets to locations

This tells the app which locations' inventory to count per market, so an out-of-stock preorder triggers on the right regional stock.

  1. In the app, go to Preorder → Settings tab, scroll down to General settings → Markets & locations, and click Manage.
  2. For each market, click the pencil to open Edit locations, tick the locations that stock that market, and click Done.
  3. Save.

Notes:

  • A market with no locations selected shows All fulfillable locations — it counts every fulfillment location.
  • Only locations with fulfillment enabled count.

How it looks in your store

  • Shoppers in a selected market see the Preorder button (per your campaign type — in stock, out of stock, or always).
  • Shoppers in other markets see the normal Add to Cart, or your Sold out text if the item is out of stock with continue-selling on.
  • For an out-of-stock preorder, the button now flips based on stock at that market's assigned locations — so one market can show Preorder while another still shows Add to Cart from its own stock.

Use cases

Sell a preorder in one region only. Launch a preorder for Spain (or Haiti, France…) while the rest of the world keeps buying normally. Set the campaign to Specific markets and pick just that market.

Regional backorder. US stock hits zero but you have inventory elsewhere. Run an out-of-stock preorder targeting the US, and map the US market to your US location — US shoppers can backorder while other markets keep selling from their own stock.

Count only certain locations — even with one market. Have a 3PL, TikTok, or marketplace warehouse whose stock shouldn't decide your preorder? In Markets & locations, assign your market to only the web-fulfillment locations you want counted. Everything else is ignored. This also covers "keep selling until stock lands at my new warehouse" — map the market to that location only.

Back in Stock by Market & Location

Notify shoppers only when a product is back at the locations that serve their market — so US customers aren't alerted by a Canadian restock, and vice-versa.

There's no market setting inside a Back in Stock campaign. Instead, alerts follow one shared setting: Markets & locations. The app records each subscriber's market automatically and matches it against your location map when you restock.

Step 1: Map markets to locations

  1. In the app, go to Back in stock → Settings tab, scroll down to General settings → Markets & locations, and click Manage.
  2. For each market, click the pencil to open Edit locations, tick the locations that stock that market, and click Done.
  3. Save.

That's the whole setup — every Back in Stock campaign respects it automatically.

Notes:

  • A market with no locations selected uses All fulfillable locations (all fulfillment locations count).
  • If you set up no map at all, alerts stay global — any location's restock notifies every subscriber.
  • Only fulfillment-enabled locations count.

How it works in your store

  • When a shopper subscribes, the app quietly records which market they're in.
  • When you restock, a subscriber is emailed only when:

1. the restocked location belongs to their market, and 2. that market's stock at its assigned locations crosses your notification threshold.

So a Canadian restock emails your Canadian subscribers; your US subscribers keep waiting until US stock returns.

Use cases

Separate US and Canada inventory. The #1 reason merchants switch to us for Back in Stock. Map the US market to your US location and the Canada market to your Canada location — each region's subscribers are only notified when their stock returns.

Notify from one warehouse only. Restocks arrive at several locations, but only one should trigger alerts for a market. Assign that market to just that one location.

Exclude a location from alerts. Stop a 3PL, marketplace, or overflow warehouse from triggering restock emails — assign the market only to the fulfillment locations you want to drive notifications.
