How do I tag customers by VIP tier in Shopify? (Essential Loyalty app)
The app can add a Shopify customer tag for each VIP tier. You can then use that tag in customer segments, discount rules, and Shopify Flow, without relying on the Loyalty app.
- In the Loyalty app, go to Program → Points → Tier settings.
- Turn on Tag customers with their tier. This option is off by default.
- Optionally, open each tier and enter a value in the Customer tag field (for example
vip-gold). If you leave it empty, the app creates a tag from the tier name, in the formattier-gold. - Save. The app adds the tag to customers when they reach the tier.
Using the tag
- Customer segments: use a filter such as
customer_tags CONTAINS 'tier-gold'. - Shopify Flow: start a workflow from a customer tag being added, or from the app's tier upgraded and tier downgraded events.
- Discounts: a discount can be limited to customers with a specific tag.
Good to know
- The base tier is not tagged. Customers in the base tier usually have no VIP tag.
- When a customer moves to a new tier, the app removes the old tier tag and adds the new one. This can take a short time to update.
