How do I import my customers and their points from a CSV file? (Essential Loyalty app)

You can import customers, points balances, and VIP tiers from a CSV file. Use the template from the app to make sure the columns are correct.

Required columns

The column headers must match exactly, including capitals:

  • Email
  • Points Balance
  • Birthday (can be left empty)
  • VIP Tier

The template can also include Shopify Id, Phone Number, and Lifetime Points. We recommend including Lifetime Points when you migrate.

Formatting rules

  • Points must be whole numbers. Do not use decimals.
  • Use YYYY-MM-DD for birthdays. Invalid dates are skipped.
  • The file can be up to 100 MB. A single import can create up to 100,000 new customers. Split larger files.

Important

  • Customers must already exist in your Shopify store. The import matches them by email, and does not create Shopify customers.
  • A file that matches no customers is marked as Failed. A partial import is marked Completed with notes. The notes show how many rows matched, were created, were updated, or were skipped, and why.

Migrating from another loyalty app

Export your customers from the old app, then map its columns to the template. Email-based migrations from Smile, LoyaltyLion, and Yotpo are supported. For other apps, map the columns yourself.

How imported points affect tiers

  • If you don't import lifetime points, they are set to at least the imported balance.
  • If you import a VIP Tier value, that tier is used as-is.
  • Otherwise, tiers are recalculated for points-based programs.
