Payment Method Customization on Essential Checkout

A payment customization changes the payment options a customer sees at checkout. As with delivery, you can hide a method, rename it, add a prefix or suffix, and reorder the list — optionally only when a condition is met.

In the rule builder this is the Customize payment methods section: "Add methods you want to hide, rename or reorder."

Add a payment method

  1. In the Customize payment methods section, click Add payment method.
  2. The Add payment method dialog shows a list of common payment methods and gateways (Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna, Cash on Delivery, and more). Tick the ones you want to act on.
  3. Use the search box (Search or add new) to filter, or Select all / Select none.
  4. Click Done.

Why a fixed list? Shopify doesn't expose your live payment gateway names to the app, so we offer a curated list of widely-used methods instead. If your gateway appears at checkout under a different label, match it with a custom rule (below) rather than the checkbox.

Choose what happens to each method

The payment method table — per-method effect and ordering

Each row has a Change column. Pick one effect per method:

  • Hide — remove the method from checkout.
  • Rename to — replace the label with text you enter.
  • Add prefix — put text before the existing label.
  • Add suffix — put text after it.
  • No change — leave it as-is (useful when you only want it in a manual reorder).

Reorder methods

The Change column header has a sort control:

  • Shopify default (lowest price) — Shopify's normal ordering.
  • Manual — drag the handle on the left of each row to arrange them.

In manual mode a marker row reads "All other payment methods will appear here…". Drag it to set where unlisted methods land.

Why reorder? Ranking a method to the top influences which payment option is selected by default.

Match methods by name

To catch a method that isn't in the list, or whose label varies, add a custom rule:

  1. Open the Add payment method dialog and type into the search box.
  2. Below the results, choose a match rule for your text: Contains, Excludes, Starts with, Ends with, Is, or Is not.

Then set the effect (hide, rename, …) as usual.

Tip: Contains is the most forgiving match — e.g. a rule that contains "PayPal" catches "PayPal Express Checkout" and similar variants.

Apply only in certain cases

Leave Conditions empty to apply the rule to every checkout, or add conditions to target it. See Building conditions.

Example: hide Cash on Delivery (COD) when the Cart total is above $500, or when the Country is not the one where you can collect cash.

Publish

Set Status to Active and click Save, then test at checkout.

Watch out: don't hide every payment method for a given checkout — a customer with no payment option left can't complete the order.
