Cart Drawer: Free Gift Rules and Letting Customers Choose a Gift
This article explains how to set up free gift rewards in Spend Tiers, let customers choose their gift, and understand how gifts are added and removed automatically.
Set up a free gift spend tier
- Go to Essential Cart Drawer → Spend Tiers.
- Click Add tier.
- Set your cart threshold.
- Select 'Free product' as the reward.
- Choose the gift product.
You can add more than one gift product to the same tier. The app supports multiple gift products per tier, not just one.
Choose what triggers the tier
Under Goal, choose how a customer qualifies for the tier: amount spent, item count, or specific products added to cart.
The Goal setting applies to every tier in the same group. You cannot mix trigger types, so one tier using amount and another using item count in the same group is not possible.
| Trigger type | How it qualifies |
|---|---|
| Amount | Cart subtotal reaches the threshold |
| Item count | Number of items in cart reaches the threshold |
| Specific products | One or more chosen products are added to cart |
Free gift for a specific collection
- Under Goal, choose 'specific products added to cart'.
- Click Browse.
- Use the Collection filter to select the qualifying products.
To stop a product from counting toward the threshold, exclude it from the goal. For example, exclude Digital Gift Cards so they don't count toward qualifying spend.
You can exclude by collection. You cannot exclude individual products or variants when the collection contains many products.
Multiple gift products and letting customers choose
A tier can offer more than one gift product. You decide whether the customer picks one or the app assigns one automatically.
Let customers pick
- Open the tier's reward settings.
- Enable 'Allow customer to choose gift'.
- Set the button text shown in the cart drawer.
When enabled, customers see a Choose Gift button in the cart drawer. Tapping it opens a modal listing all gift products for that tier, and the customer picks one.
Auto-assign instead
- Disable 'Allow customer to choose gift'.
With this off, the app assigns one of the tier's gift products automatically once the customer qualifies. There is no way to control which one is picked, and no way to limit how many mystery-gift assignments happen across a campaign.
Make sure the gift shows as a $0 line item
Two setup mistakes stop a gift from showing correctly in the cart drawer.
Do not set the gift product's price to $0 in Shopify. Keep it at its regular price. The app applies the discount automatically when the customer earns the gift. A manually priced $0 product is not the same as an earned free gift, and it won't behave correctly in the tier logic.
The gift product must be Active and available on the Online Store sales channel. A Draft product will not appear as a line item in the cart drawer, even if it's selected as a tier reward.
How gifts are added and removed
The app re-evaluates qualified tiers whenever the cart changes and adds or removes gifts on a short debounce. You don't need to refresh the page.
- Qualification for a free product reward is based on items in the cart. Cart-level discounts are ignored when checking whether a tier is met.
- Gift removal is based on the raw cart subtotal, not the subtotal after a discount code is applied. If a discount code changes the effective total but not the raw subtotal, the gift stays.
There is no setting to remove a lower-tier gift automatically once a customer reaches a higher tier. If a customer qualifies for two tiers, both gifts can stay in the cart.
Known limits
| Limit | Detail |
|---|---|
| Trigger type | Set once per tier group; all tiers in the group share it |
| Exclusions | By collection only, not by individual product or variant in large collections |
| Lower-tier gifts | Not removed automatically when a higher tier is reached |
| Removal basis | Raw cart subtotal, not the discounted total after a discount code |
| Order limits | No option to restrict a gift campaign to the first few orders |
