How to Connect Klaviyo to Essential Loyalty

Connecting Klaviyo lets you use your loyalty data — points, tier, referral status, birthday — for segmentation and flows inside Klaviyo itself, alongside the rest of your marketing data. This is a full authenticated connection: once connected, customer profiles sync automatically and every loyalty event (points earned, rewards redeemed, tier changes, and more) is pushed to Klaviyo in real time.

Connect your Klaviyo account

  1. Go to Settings → Integrations.
  2. Under Email Marketing, click into Klaviyo.
  3. Click Connect with Klaviyo.
  4. A popup opens for you to log in to Klaviyo and approve the connection. Approve it there — that screen and its wording belong to Klaviyo, not to Essential Loyalty.
  5. Once approved, the popup closes and the page updates to show a green Connected badge.

Important: the Enabled/Disabled toggle stays greyed out until you're connected — that's expected. It only matters once there's a live connection to turn on or off.

That's it — no API key needed for this path. (There's also a legacy private-API-key method, still supported for stores that set it up before OAuth existed — see below.)

What syncs to Klaviyo

Customer profile properties, kept in sync automatically as they change:

  • Points balance
  • Lifetime points
  • Loyalty status (excluded/included)
  • Referral URL
  • VIP tier
  • Date of birth

To confirm a profile actually synced: in Klaviyo, go to Profiles and search by the customer's email — you'll see the Essential Loyalty   properties (points balance, tier, and so on) listed on their profile.

Events, pushed the moment they happen, so you can build Klaviyo flows off them:

What happens in Essential Loyalty Klaviyo metric name
Customer joins the loyalty program Joined Loyalty Program
Points earned (orders, actions) Points Earned
Points deducted (refund) Points Deducted
Reward redeemed Reward Redeemed
Referral reward earned Referral Reward Earned
Tier achieved Tier Achieved
Reward expired Points Expired
Loyalty profile updated (balance, tier) Loyalty Profile Updated

You'll find this same table on the Klaviyo settings page in the app, under Tracked events.

Good to know: all 8 metric names above appear in Klaviyo as soon as you connect — even before any real customer activity happens — so they're immediately available to pick as a Flow trigger. If you don't see them in Klaviyo right after connecting, something's off — they should show up immediately. Real customer data is different: profiles and events sync as activity happens, not all at once retroactively, so it's normal for that to build up gradually. Essential Loyalty's own settings page doesn't show a live preview of synced data — check Analytics → Metrics in Klaviyo directly for the 8 names above.

Full data synchronization

Newly connected? Profiles sync automatically going forward, but existing customers can be pushed over too:

  • On the Klaviyo settings page, find the Full data synchronization card.
  • Click Synchronize to push all customers now.
  • This is rate-limited to once per hour — the button disables itself in between, and the card shows Last run: with the most recent sync time.

Legacy: connecting with a Private API Key

Some stores connected before OAuth existed and are still on a private-API-key connection. Both methods work, but OAuth is the more secure option going forward:

  1. Get your key from Klaviyo: Get your Private API Key here (opens klaviyo.com/account#api-keys-tab  ), or find it yourself under Klaviyo → Settings → API Keys.
  2. Paste it into the Private API Key field on the Klaviyo settings page and save.

If a store is already connected this way, the page shows a note that it's using a private API key and offers the option to disconnect and reconnect with Connect with Klaviyo instead.

Disconnecting

Click Disconnect on the Klaviyo settings page. This turns the integration off — it does not delete anything already synced to Klaviyo, and doesn't touch your Klaviyo account itself.
